What is The Future of Technology in Education?

Updated: Jun 20, 2023

The introduction of technology has had a world-changing effect, more so in the world of education. The importance of digital technology in the education system cannot be over-emphasized, and its role in ensuring global change has been seen in its tremendous effects ever since the pandemic. The use of technology enables the effectiveness and efficiency of students.

Education is the process of imparting knowledge and skills using enhanced means to proffer better understanding. Technology on the other hand refers to the organisation of knowledge for practical purposes, therefore when technology is incorporated into education, it would enable students to adequately implement information learnt.

One relevance of technology in education is the fact that technology is a human product. It is a tool designed to aid, empower, and accelerate us to create, communicate effectively, and collaborate better. In an article written by Tan Seng Chee and Tsering Wangyyal, it was stated that 'not taking advantage of the technology of our times is analogous to putting a break on the progress of civilization.’

Nowadays, we are opportune to virtually connect with tutors from various sections of the world, all thanks to unending technological advancements. From the comfort of students' homes, they are able to successfully connect and engage with educators. A prominent example of this is Khan Academy. With the influence of Khan Academy, learners are able to adequately prepare for not only school-based exams but also international examinations.

Admittedly, I can attest to the relevance technology has played in revamping the education system. In preparation for the finals of my A levels, a friend of mine recommended that I use Khan Academy. To my amazement, upon my dutiful connection with the Khan Academy, I am able to testify to its impact.

With the pose of the pandemic, we were opportune to see the numerous benefits offered by technology in classroom developments and advancements. Personally, I had a great thrill learning from the comfort of my home as it also enabled me to instantly research further on occasions where I ain't clear on a particular topic.

The advent of technology in all spheres of our lives has also highlighted its usefulness in education. Since technology cuts across health, generating wealth, and the efficiency of the citizens, any form of education that doesn't involve the aid of technology might seem redundant considering the exposure technology offers.

Technically, the lack of technological influence in the education system especially in developing countries would result in an abysmal comprehension of extremely complex fields like the sciences, thus resulting in the production of students who wouldn't be able to apply theories and thoughts into practical use and also proffer solutions.

Also, to achieve the target of SDG 4 which asserts the need to, "ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all", it is paramount that technology is fully utilized in the education sector as it will speedily help in the realization of the sustainable development goals.

Undoubtedly, technology would also support teachers in designing meaningful exercises for students to learn, as it is evident and attainable.

In conclusion, we may wonder, how will technology change education in the future? The truth is that the future of education would be bright if technology is encouraged. We should aim to foster the human-computer partnership which would birth a new dawn in the education sector, also engaging learners in deeper learning. It is time to forgo our misgivings about technology and find solutions to circumvent challenges hovering around in order to reap bountifully the benefits technology has to offer us.
